Sand dollars!

IMG_6430

Earlier last week, I read an article in our local paper talking about a massive sand dollar kill off with thousands of sand dollars washing up onshore.  The article went on to talk about whether or not it was due to the BP oil spill, but local scientists seemed to think it is something that is naturally occurring.

Whatever the circumstances, it was a great time to see if we could find any.  We parked our car at the gate to the Gulf Islands National Seashore and started walking.  We passed several people who told us to walk farther and farther and….. we found some!

The kids loved hunting through the seaweed for the little treasures.  We came home with well over one hundred!

Too bad the fun had to end sometime.  Here’s a look at our walk back to the car.  We parked at those buildings, waaaaayyyy in the distance!!  I can honestly say we probably walked a mile down AND back, but the kids did great and have memories to last a lifetime!
