Yesterday, my culture group got together and went mikan picking. A mikan is basically a tangerine, but according to wikipedia it is a small orange similar to a clementine, but different. They're small, delicious, and seedless so they're tangerines to me.
Every winter in the hills of Okinawa, small stands start popping up roadside selling mikans and even more signs pop up with cartoon tangerines beckoning you to come pick them at different farms. Yesterday we went to one of the only organic farms available.
We basically pulled up to an obasan's (grandmother) house and paid 250 yen to pick mikans and paid 250 yen per kilogram at the end. Not a bad price considering it is all you can eat while you're picking! The obasan even led us up to the top of the hill where the best mikans could be found and made sure we picked them from different trees because each tree has a different flavor.
Oh yeah, and here's a pic of how you park Japanese style. After 3 years I've gotten pretty good, I'm the orange car!! (The car behind me has only been on island for a few months.)

Ha Ha - Because Hawaii is like a different country - I can relate! They all park backwards here and after a year of living here, I'm pretty good at it!!
